It may sound very easy… Just copying a Youtube-Link and paste it on your website to give your visitors the possibility to watch your videos. But regarding the General Data Protction Regulation (GDPR) it is not that easy to do. Just because of that, I am happy to give you some hints to be safe using Youtube regarding GDPR.
Of course, because I am not a lawyer, this is no legal advice!
Youtube allows to generate embed-codes. These will not set any cookies.
Just open the video (of course, while you are logged in) and klick the “share”-button. Choose embed and activate the advanced privacy mode. Vidoes will no longer be loaded from youtube.com, but from youtube-nocookie.com.
Even though, there will be some connections to Google´s server before your visitor klicks your video.
At least, Google will recieve less and DoubleClick (Google´s tool for targeting and ads) no data.
Using the Plugin WP YouTube Lyte you have the possibility to use Youtube in a smarter way.
Only the preview-image will be loaded from Youtube´s servers. The video itself will only be browsed, if the user klicks the link. WP Youtube Lyte automatically recognizes Youtube videos, so you do not have to change the embed-code manually.
If you save the images on your server´s own clipboard, it is not nessecary to use external connections to Youtube-servers. Of course, you have to change that setting manually after installing the plugin.
Interesting to know: the layout will not change!
One more thing: You will have to create an API-code in google to use the plugin.
To present your video in the best possible way, you should choose a good preview-image.
Start the video and open the settings. Find the thumbnail and get the perfect image.
I wish you a lot of fun using Youtube videos!
